The Brunner Investment Trust was established in 1927 as an investment vehicle for the Brunner family, who remain significant shareholders in the trust today.
John Brunner was born in Zurich and migrated to Lancashire in 1832. His son, Sir John Brunner, was one of the most successful industrialists of the nineteenth century as well as a Liberal MP. In 1873 he co-founded Brunner Mond & Company, the largest of four companies that came together to form Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) in 1926. The following year the Brunner family chose to sell its ICI shares and establish a broad, long term investment vehicle.
It remains today a global equity investment trust which aims to curate a portfolio of resilient companies that could generate smooth returns in the face of volatility and changing economic conditions. The managers, Allianz Global Investors, have the freedom to choose any company from across the globe, regardless of sector or region which fits precisely with EXE Capital Management’s Investment Beliefs.
By investing in strong businesses with a decent cash yield it has proven its ability to deliver a rising income, even in the face of market turbulence and is one of the Association of Investment Companies’ (AIC) “Dividend Heroes” having raised its dividend to shareholders every year since 1972.
The Brunner trust is currently number one in the AIC Global sector having notched up five consecutive years of outperformance. Over the last five years* it has also outperformed the average unit trust in the Global sector and the wider MSCI World index. The Brunner Investment Trust is included within our Income & Growth Portfolio and sits in our wider buy-list.
